Health

Synergy

April 2, 2013 By Lisa Hill DiFusco

Mother TheresaMother Teresa once said, “Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We only have today. Let us begin.” We often lead our daily lives from task to task to task – It’s a constant movement and we often forget to stop and breathe. Our facilitator, Lisa, reminded all of us group participants of the importance of engaging in mind-body skills. After a quick discussion about Peter McDonald’s farm, and clean and organic farming, Lisa led the group in a 15 minute mindful-meditation. Engaging in mind-body techniques, allows us to stay present to the moment and release our stress loads.

In addition to engaging in mind-body techniques, the support group emphasizes the importance of accountability. As group members we are asked to keep a food log to learn about our food habits and our body’s response to foods. We then share that information with group members.

In his best-selling book,The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Steven R. Covey shares his knowledge on experiencing optimal health in mind, body and spirit. His fifth habit reads “Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” Our food logs serve as a great tool for self-awareness and self-understanding in which we get to visually see our food habits and how they have affected our overall health. This sharing of our food intake and habits leads to the sixth habit in the book: “Synergize”. A synergistic energy leads to new knowledge and discoveries what we would have not discovered by ourselves. For example, an individual may be struggling, and by sharing their food habits, cravings and desires according to the designed food plan, it may become apparent that that individual is protein deficient. Our Food as Medicine Support group brings many minds together and at the end of each session each one of us goes home with new found self-knowledge.

Food is Your Best Medicine!

February 14, 2013 By Lisa Hill DiFusco

One of the most common yet hidden sources of  chronic illness is right under your finger tips… food!

When Hippocrates, the well known Father of Medicine said, “Let food by thy medicine and medicine be thy food…”, he knew what he was talking about.

But food today is far different from the food of our ancestor’s time, or even our grandmother’s kitchen.  Do you remember, for example, when iceberg lettuce used to be green? Today it is mostly white. Romaine lettuce used to be green. Today grocery stores sell romaine hearts that are mostly white. Both of these items lack chlorophyll, which under normal circumstances converts to magnesium, a necessary mineral responsible for hundreds of bodily functions.

Food is our best medicine. But we need to know what to eat and how to eat in order to achieve optimal health.

Become The Most Important Person in Your World

February 13, 2013 By Lisa Hill DiFusco

Wouldn’t it be powerful if you fell in love with yourself so deeply that you would do just about anything if you knew it would make you happy?  This is precisely how much life loves you and wants you to nurture yourself.  The deeper you love yourself, the more the universe will affirm your worth.  Then you can enjoy a lifelong love affair that brings you the richest fulfillment from the inside out.

Alan Cohen

Self-care is self-love.

Our facilitator, Lisa, began the Royal Flush session by asking the participants to comment on any changes that have been noted with an increase in meditation. All of the participants spoke of positive changes in their lives – vivid dreams, an increased desire to journal and an overall feeling of peace and relaxation. Recent research shows that mindfulness meditation is a great tool for stress reduction and a form of self-care. Through mind-body centering techniques, you can become grounded, increase your  mental clarity and place yourself in the best position to love others. The best gift you can give another, is to take care of yourself.

“Nourish your cells, not just your taste buds.”

Another powerful way to take care of yourself is to provide your body with adequate nutrition. Our current society has parted from the kitchen and food we love. Mothers used to cook in the kitchen with their daughters, who in turn cooked with their daughters. Love was part of the equation and those who consumed the homemade food benefited. The Royal Flush encourages its participants to love the food they prepare and to allow that love to transfer to the body. Love heals us from the inside out!

Happiness Is An Inside Job

January 31, 2013 By Lisa Hill DiFusco

In the 1990s, scientific research highlighted the fact that there is a mind-body connection. The Royal Flush began with a discussion regarding the effects of stress in relation to eating. A Royal Flush, is a food as medicine support group that helps the body detoxify and heal the GI tract. As a result the participants, eliminate main sources of delayed food allergies, loose weight,  resolve digestive disorders and much more. In addition to restoring and re-vitalizing health, A Royal Flush aims to create a deeper sense of self-awareness in each of its participants. The more aware one is, the more options one has.

Has it ever happened? Where you find yourself asking where there is not more love, more money, more time? Often times, we pay attention to deficits in our lives and often try to fulfill them with external factors. Our facilitator, Lisa, spoke to all the participants about the importance of developing a strong sense of self. Loving oneself is a prerequisite to loving others and becoming aware of the abundance that surrounds us. The group went on to participate in meditation for twenty minutes, a mind-body technique where the individual can center him or herself, feel relaxed and have a moment of release.

A Royal Flush, is straightforward and takes dedication, determination and hard work. Many of the members expressed difficulty/lack of accessibility to some products in the program. However, this quickly led to a supportive group discussion in which some participants began to talk about where to find certain ingredients, the best way to prepare the foods and what to do in case of travel/restaurant outings.

Raw Food Thai Coconut Soup

January 8, 2013 By Lisa Hill DiFusco

Ingredients:
1 young coconut
4 cloves garlic
2 tsp fresh minced ginger or galangal
3 tbsp lime juice
2 tsp cold pressed olive or flax oil
1 tsp curry powder
1 medium tomato
1/4 tsp sea salt
1/2 tsp fresh minced chili, or to taste (I used cayenne pepper)
2 tbsp chopped fresh cilantro
diced bell pepper (optional)
chopped cherry tomatoes (optional)
mushrooms, thinly sliced (optional)

Preparation:
Open the coconut and drain the water into a blender. Scrape out the meat, and add to the blender.

Add garlic, ginger or galangal, lime juice, oil, curry powder, tomato, salt and chili. Blend until smooth and creamy. Adjust seasonings to taste.

Add cilantro and pulse until cilantro is finely minced.

Pour into serving containers and add any chopped veggies you like: bell pepper, tomatoes and thinly sliced mushrooms work well.

This raw coconut soup works well after it’s had a chance to chill in the fridge for a couple hours to allow the flavors to set. It’ll need a good stirring before serving, however, as the oils and coconut water will tend to separate.

Enjoy your raw food Thai coconut soup! Yum!
