The Dumbing Down of the American Public – Part III

April 25, 2014 By Lisa Hill DiFusco

Where Do Mental Health Disorders Come From?

Part III of a Five-Part Series

Diagnostic Statistic Manual - 5A marked increase in the consumption of psychiatric drugs is occurring simultaneously with an increase in suicides, violence on our streets, and Social Security disability claims. Is there a relationship?

The fifth revision of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, otherwise known as the DSM-5 was released in May 2013 and has been the subject of scathing criticism by psychiatrists and psychologists due to its lack of science and reliability. Within it the list of  (insurance-reimbursed) “billable conditions” grew to include Caffeine Disorder, Jet Lag and Mathematics Disorder, to name a few. The DSM IV (the prior edition) created a 40-fold increase in child bipolar diagnosis from the prior edition and an epidemic of dangerous antipsychotic prescriptions for small children.

Please join us for a riveting discussion outlining the scientific failure of the DSM-5 and the implication for adults, youth and children.

Join us Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at 2 pm or 6 pm.

I am thankful

Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.

The Power of Vulnerability

August 14, 2013 By Lisa Hill DiFusco

Dr. Brené Brown is a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. She has spent the past ten years studying vulnerability, courage, authenticity, and shame. She spent the first five years of her decade-long study focusing on shame and empathy, and is now using that work to explore a concept that she calls Wholeheartedness. She poses the questions:

How do we learn to embrace our vulnerabilities and imperfections so that we can engage in our lives from a place of authenticity and worthiness? How do we cultivate the courage, compassion, and connection that we need to recognize that we are enough – that we are worthy of love, belonging, and joy?
